Recensione tratta dal dizionario cinematografico "Morandini": Postmoderna metropoli balneare, futuribile cocktail di Città del Messico, Vera Cruz e Los Angeles, Verona Beach è dilaniata dalla lotta tra due bande giovanili che fanno capo a due potenti ras neofeudali, Ted Montague (B. Dennehy) e Fulgencio Capulet (P. Sorvino). I Montague sono wasp (bianchi, anglosassoni, protestanti) mentre i secondi sono latino-americani cattolici. Romeo Montague (L. DiCaprio) e Juliet Capulet (C. Danes) s'innamorano a prima vista, ma rimarranno schiacciati dall'insanabile rivalità tra i due clan. Pistole a profusione, come in un film di John Woo made in Hong Kong, e tacchi metallici degli stivali. B. Luhrmann, già regista di Ballroom (1992) – l'unico cineasta al mondo che si chiama Baz – la chiama “visione psichedelica di una passione giovanile senza tempo”. Qui comincia veramente la popolarità di DiCaprio tra le teenager di mezzo mondo. Con Hamlet, la tragedia veronese è in testa alla classifica dei film scespiriani con una trentina di film, anche se 14 sono muti. Un film epico davvero spettacolare, basato sui valori e l'onore di una sorta di guerrieri, dei quali conosciamo pochissimo, ma ke esercitano questo fascino misterioso ke nn potremo mai comprendere: i SAMURAI.
