Uscì il 21 luglio 1987, ma fu subito ritirato dal commercio a causa della copertina che raffigurava un quadro di Robert Williams censurato (e intitolato appunto Appetite for Destruction, da cui il titolo del disco). Fu rimesso in commercio con una nuova copertina in cui c’era il famoso tatuaggio di Axl e il logo del gruppo. Il disco fu riconosciuto tra i primi a lanciare lo sleaze metal, un sottogenere del glam metal più sporco, e spesso influenzato dal punk, e di cui loro furono i maggiori esponenti assieme a Faster Pussycat, L.A. Guns e Dangerous Toys. Quest’album fu il loro primo grande successo, che spopolò prima negli Stati Uniti e poi in tutto il mondo, grazie anche ad un singolo celebre come "Welcome to the Jungle", che rispecchia perfettamente la vita randagia e sfrenata condotta in quegli anni dalla band. Ben stimati furono anche gli altri singoli, e in particolare "Sweet Child O’ Mine", brano lento scritto da Axl Rose e dedicato a quella che era la sua compagna del momento, e che divenne uno dei brani più famosi dei Guns. Appetite for Destruction ha venduto più di 25 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo e resta, al 2005, il disco più venduto del gruppo. Solo negli Stati Uniti ha piazzato 15 milioni di copie, e fu certificato con il disco di diamante. L’intro di "Sweet Child O’ Mine" è uno dei piu’ famosi riff di chitarra rock, e si dice che sia stata creato "per gioco" da Slash durante una prova del gruppo. L’uscita dell’album fu supportata dal lancio di un tour, che portò i Guns a calcare i palchi di tutto il mondo. Io ho comprato la cassetta l’anno dopo, quando è uscito in italia (i cd erano ancora fantascenza  ).... dopo essermi follemente innamorato dei 2 primi singoli WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE e SWEET CHILD O’ MINE.
