“Al primo piano vivono i ciechi

.....Arianna dalle bianche colombe, incantatrice di serpenti! La donna del palanchino non poteva essere nessuna altra. Figlia di Minosse, e divino ricettacolo di Cibele, la Madre di Tutti.
....Vuole così la leggenda che il Minotauro venisse rinchiuso nel labirinto e che ogni anno sette giovani e sette fanciulle ateniesi (che erano stati vinti dal re di Creta) venissero sacrificati al Minotauro per saziare la sua fame di carne umana.
Per due volte fu ripetuto il sacrificio fino a quando, alla terza spedizione, giunse a Creta Teseo, figlio di Etra ed Egeo, sovrano di Atene, fingendosi parte del gruppo dei sacrificandi con l’intento di porre fine ai sacrifici. L’impresa era molto difficile non solo perchè doveva uccidere il Minotauro, ma perchè una volta entrato nel labirinto, era impossibile uscirne.Il giovane si innamorò di Arianna, figlia di Minosse e da questa fu aiutato nell’impresa che avrebbe liberato Creta dal Minotauro. Infatti quando fu il turno di Teseo di entrare nel labirinto, questi dipanò lungo la strada un rocchetto d filo, fornitogli da Arianna, su suggerimento di Dedalo. Quando Teseo giunse al cospetto del mostro lo uccise e riavvolgendo il filo, riuscì ad uscire dal labirinto.
Finì così l’orrendo sacrificio che era stato imposto da Minosse agli ateniesi e contemporaneamente Teseo ed Arianna fuggivano da Creta recandosi a Nasso.
Non appena sbarcati, Teseo, dichiarò ad Arianna che aveva finto di amarla per salvarsi dalla prova del labirinto e abbandonò la fanciulla sulla spiaggia.
Arianna, rimasta sola, iniziò a piangere fino a quando apparve al suo cospetto il dio Dioniso che per confortarla le donò una meravigliosa corona d’oro, opera di Efesto, che venne poi mutata dal dio in una costellazione spendende: la costellazione di Arianna

A strange story comes from the Adriatic. It appears that on the night of the 9th, as the Italia Steamship Company's vessel "Victorine" was passing a little before midnight the point known as "the Spear of Ivan," on the coast of the Blue Mountains, the attention of the Captain, then on the bridge, was called by the look- out man to a tiny floating light close inshore. It is the custom of some South-going ships to run close to the Spear of Ivan in fine weather, as the water is deep, and there is no settled current; also there are no outlying rocks. Indeed, some years ago the local steamers had become accustomed to hug the shore here so closely that an intimation was sent from Lloyd's that any mischance under the circumstances would not be included in ordinary sea risks. Captain Mirolani is one of those who insist on a wholesome distance from the promontory being kept; but on his attention having been called to the circumstance reported, he thought it well to investigate it, as it might be some case of personal distress. Accordingly, he had the engines slowed down, and edged cautiously in towards shore. He was joined on the bridge by two of his officers, Signori Falamano and Destilia, and by one passenger on board, Mr. Peter Caulfield, whose reports of Spiritual Phenomena in remote places are well known to the readers of "The Journal of Occultism." The following account of the strange occurrence written by him, and attested by the signatures of Captain Mirolani and the other gentleman named, has been sent to us

Abraham "Bram" Stoker (1847-1912), Irish writer, best known for his vampire novel Dracula(1897).
Bram Stoker was born near Dublin on November 8, 1847, the third of seven children. An unidentified illness kept him virtually bedridden until age seven. Although he remained shy and bookish, in his adolescence Bram Stoker was anything but sickly. Perhaps to make amends for his earlier frailty, he was by this time developing into a fine athlete. At Trinity College, Dublin, he would conquer his shyness and be named University Athlete.
Young Bram had always dreamed of becoming a writer, but his father had safer plans. Yielding to the father's wishes, Bram followed him into a career as a civil servant in Dublin Castle. While climbing the civil service ladder, he wrote a dry tome entitled Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland. This book of rules, however, would not be published until 1879, by which time Stoker would be married, living in another country, and immersed in a new career.
During his eight-year stint in the civil service, Stoker continued to write stories, the first of which, a dream fantasy entitled "The Crystal Cup" (1872), was published by The London Society. A serialized four-part horror piece, entitled "The Chain of Destiny" followed three years later in the The Shamrock. He also found time to take unpaid positions as theatrical critic for Dublin's Evening Mail and, later, as editor of The Irish Echo.
In 1878, Henry Irving offered Stoker the job of actor-manager at London's Lyceum Theatre. Stoker promptly resigned the civil service, married Florence Balcombe and set off for his new life in London. Within a year, Florence had given birth to their only child, a son, Noel, but Stoker and his wife, though continuing to keep up appearances, are said to have become estranged.
Despite his heavy professional duties, Stoker somehow found the time to write fiction. His first book, Under the Sunset (1882), consisted of eight eerie fairy tales for children. His first full-length novel, The Snake's Pass, was published in 1890. That same year marks the beginning of Stoker's research for his masterwork, Dracula, which, would be published in 1897 to world-wide acclaim. Stoker wrote several short stories, novels and essays but his name is inextricably linked with Dracula.
Stoker continued to pursue a writing career until his death on April 20, 1912.
