Ein ewig Rätsel
Der Mythos bildete sich schon zu Lebzeiten des Königs. "Ein ewig Rätsel will ich bleiben mir und anderen", hatte Ludwig einst seiner Erzieherin geschrieben, und dieses Rätselhafte fasziniert die Menschen noch heute. Der Dichter Paul Verlaine nannte Ludwig II. den "einzigen wahren König dieses Jahrhunderts". Der menschenscheue Träumer, das Gegenbild eines Bürgerkönigs, ist noch heute als "der Kini" präsent und wird als Idol verehrt.
Seine Schlösser, die nie ein Fremder betreten sollte, wurden seit dem Tode Ludwigs II. von mehr als 50 Millionen Menschen besucht. Sie sind steinerne Zeugen der idealen Gegenwelt, die der König sich in Abwendung von der Gegenwart errichtete. An dem Versuch der Selbstverwirklichung im Historischen, im Poetischen und im Idealen ist Ludwig II. schließlich gescheitert. Er zog den Tod wohl der Rückkehr in die Wirklichkeit vor.
