Il "genio del soul" si è spento il 10 giugno nella sua casa di Beverly Hills. La musica perde uno dei suoi maestri Se ne è andato anche lui. All'età di 73 anni ci ha lasciato forse uno dei più grandi e carismatici "soul-man" americani: Ray Charles. Tutti, anche quelli che non sono appassionati di blues, jazz o soul, conoscevano quella faccia sempre sorridente, quel modo tutto personale di ondeggiare e accompagnare il corpo mentre suonava il pianoforte, quegli occhiali scuri, che sono diventati un suo marchio di fabbrica. Quegli stessi occhiali che in realtà servivano per "nascondere" la cecità, un handicap che non ha mai influenzato la sua musica e il suo modo di porsi verso la gente. Indimenticabili le sue canzoni e le sue interpretazioni, sia che si trattasse di un soul lento ed ispirato piuttosto che di un trascinante rythm'n'blues. Impossibile dire quale fosse il brano che lo caratterizzasse di più, ma se dobbiamo sceglierne uno, dovremmo dire Georgia on My Mind, una canzone che letteralmente provoca la "pelle d'oca" ogni volta che la si ascolta. "Sono nato con la musica dentro di me, è l'unica cosa che conosco". Questo amava dire sempre al suo pubblico e questo è scritto anche nella sua toccante autobiografia "Brother Ray". Un uomo nato povero, il 23 settembre del 1930, in una Georgia dove ancora vigeva la segregazione razziale, e che ha dovuto affrontare da subito sfide grandissime, come la perdita dei genitori all'età di 15 anni e il dramma della cecità. Questo però non gli ha impedito di essere una persona solare e positiva, che trasmetteva belle sensazioni appena toccava un tasto del pianoforte e intonava una canzone. Una persona che sapeva "riderci sopra", come si suol dire. Basti pensare alla sua indimenticabile partecipazione nel film Blues Brothers e allo spot per una casa automobilistica nel quale, lui cieco, guidava una macchina nel deserto. Ora che se ne è andato, a ricordarci quanto era grande rimangono le sue immortali canzoni, da "Hit the Road Jack" a "Night Time Is the Right Time", da "I Can't stop Loving You" a "I Got a Woman". Ciao Genious, lassù c'è un pianoforte che aspetta solo di essere suonato...
