O Zahir is a novel with many biographical
brush strokes in which Paulo Coelho makes
a since reflection about his inner feelings
and life. The main character is a renowned
author -one of the best-selling writers worldwide,
who writes about spirituality and once went
on pilgrimage along the road to Santiago-
is suddenly abandoned by his wife, who leaves
no trace behind. Subsequently, the author
becomes obsessed to understand the reason
for her desertion.
The title
omes from a tale by Jorge Luis Borges –one
of Paulo Coelho's most admired authors- published
in his book The Aleph (1949). According to
Borges, the idea of the Zahir comes from
the Islamic tradition, with an estimate origin
in the 18th century. In Arabic Zahir means
visible, present, and unable to go unnoticed.
Something or somebody that starts being of
our concern and ends up being the only thing
we can think of. This can be understood as
saintliness or insanity.
The novel will come out in Brazil in April
2005 and in the following months internationally
