"Leggero e profondo, onnipotente e indifeso, Bernardo Bertolucci rivolge il suo occhio "interno" sullo sboccio di una bellissima fanciulla americana, venuta nella campagna senese sulle tracce della madre poetessa e suicida. Finissimo orchestratore di visioni e vero corpo-macchina (nel senso che la cinepresa sembra puntualmente diventare un'estensione fisica dei suoi pori, dei suoi tessuti, delle sue cellule), il regista torna dopo quindici anni a girare in Italia dimostrando quanto sa essere alto ed ispirato ed, insieme, quanto può rovinosamente cedere. C'è qualcosa di strenuo, estremo, abissale, in questo racconto d'iniziazione, che si percepisce al di là delle splendide atmosfere e delle estasi pittoriche, nei dettagli più segreti e palpitanti e fino agli scarti grevi e superflui. Affascinante è la delicatezza del tocco nell'affrontare un tema delicato, così come la credibilità drammaturgica dell'intenso mystery esistenziale; sconcertante è la banalità dei riferimenti attualistici, così come l'identikit d'importanti personaggi complementari."
