Ecco l’ articolo:

CULTURE

“Portraits in Glass”
REFLECTIONS OF ART
By Elina Alamanou

The exhibition of the visual artist Podalenios (an artistic pseudonym) that is taking place at the Cultural Center of Ermoupoli is truly impressive.
With mirrors as the basic subject of his exhibition, the artist is playing a strange game of reflections and images with the viewer. A game in which the visitor is involved almost in spite of himself in order to realize that not only does he form a part of its, but he is even its protagonist.
Mirrors surrounded by inspirations coming from Greece, which mainly place emphasis on Greek folk culture, crafted with materials coming from Greek nature and from the sea. Old hulls, pieces of which – we could say their relics – become the frames of the mirrors of the exhibit, the frames of our very self.

The other face of the mirror
The “plan” of the artist to involve and “trap” the public in his works is truly very intelligent and inventive.
His concept of initiating the viewer into the journey of his imagination acquires a strategic importance, since the subject or subjects of the exhibit automatically become personal. The question starts to become more complicated at the point at which the viewer must develop a judgment and an opinion about what he sees. It is difficult to reject something that – in its overall image – also includes an image of yourself. At the same time, however, it seems somehow overbearing, at least with respect to a third person, for the observer of the works, the observer of himself, to admit directly that he likes what he sees.
In this way he runs the risk of talking about himself, seeming narcissistic and excessively vain. Besides, isn’t this the meaning of art? To record pieces of you, to promote what you hide inside you and to confuse you – to bring you opposite what you really are, but also with what you keep hidden from yourself and others.
From this point of view, then – in terms of the idea and its inventiveness – I can say that I liked the exhibit. I will say, however, that I also liked its other side, the one of the interplay and intrigue; however, the artwork also attracted me, whatever that may mean…
