Thomas
Schmögner is one of the foremost organists and harpsichordists in
Austria today. In addition to his degrees from Viennas Music Academy,
where he studied organ with Herbert Tachezi and harpsichord with Gordon
Murray, he was organ scholar under Daniel Roth at the Strasbourg Conservatory.
His many competition laurels include First Prize at the International
Improvisation Competition in Nürnberg, Germany and prizes from organ
competitions in Brugge, Nijmegen, and Chartres. Schmögner has been
organist at the Old University Church of Vienna. Since 1982, he has been
a regular participant as organist, harpsichordist, and conductor in the
Viennese baroque music festival SPECTACVLVM.
Schmögner has performed throughout Europe, the United States, and
Japan. He plays in various ensembles, specialising in period instruments
(e.g. Wiener Akademie, Clemencic-Consort). Schmögner is on the faculty
of the Viennese Conservatory, where he teaches organ and historical keyboard
instruments.
