Nel sud di Londra durante l’anno 1975 i fratelli David “Sylvian” Batt (cantante, chitarra e tastiere) e Steve "Jansen" Batt (batteria), con Anthony "Mick Karn" Michaelides (basso), Richard Barbieri (tastiere e sintetizzatori) e Rob Dean (chitarra), formano i Japan.

Nel 1978, sulla scia sia del glam-rock marcato David Bowie e Roxy Music, sia della corrente New Romantic, la band pubblica i primi due album: Adolescent Sex e Obscure Alternatives.

In seguito a ricorrenti viaggi in Giappone, le atmosfere esotiche orientali iniziano a comparire nelle loro sonorità; ne è prova evidente il terzo lp Quiet Life del 1979, preceduto dal singolo di successo Life In Tokyo, prodotto da Giorgio Moroder.

La chitarra inizia a passare in secondo piano lasciando spazio a sintetizzatori e tastiere che, attraverso il canto rallentato di Sylvian, creano atmosfere sperimentali e suggestive. Frutto di quest’avanguardia sonora è l’album Gentlemen Take Polaroids del 1980.

Dopo l’abbandono di Rob Dean, il quartetto rimasto pubblica Tin Drum nel 1981, perfezionando le atmosfere suggestive e inquietanti e gli ottimi livelli di ricerca melodica raggiunti nel lavoro precedente.

Nel 1982, con un concerto d’addio all’Hammersmith Odeon di Londra, immortalato nell’album Oil On Canvas, la band comunica lo scioglimento.
