- Siouxsie And The Banshees -

Londra 1976. Al “100 Club” di Malcolm McLaren durante il punk festival si presentano sul palco con Sex Pistols e Clash anche i Banshees, formati da Susan Janet Dallion “Siouxsie Sioux” alla voce, Steven Severin al basso, Marco Pirroni alla chitarra e Sid Vicious alla batteria.

Dopo innumerevoli apparizioni live e alcuni cambi di formazione, la band di Siouxsie e Severin assume una line-up più stabile con l’ingresso del chitarrista e sassofonista John McKay e del batterista Kenny Morris.

Nel 1978, con il nome Siouxsie And The Banshees, esce il singolo Hong Kong Garden e il primo album The Scream che sancisce l’inizio del distacco dalla scena punk a favore di sonorità tenebrose e distorte ma ancora frenetiche.

Il superamento e il definitivo allontanamento dal punk avviene l’anno successivo con l’aspro e oscuro lp Join Hands. Durante la presentazione dello stesso in un negozio di dischi in Scozia, a causa di un malinteso legato al numero di copie disponibili, Morris e McKay abbandonano la band all’indomani del tour promozionale.

Per far fronte agli impegni live, vengono ingaggiati Budgie alla batteria proveniente dalle Slits e Robert Smith dei Cure alla chitarra il quale, a fine tour, viene rimpiazzato da John McGeoch dei Magazine.

Con la nuova formazione viene pubblicato il terzo album Kaleidoscope del 1980, distaccato dai territori infernali del lavoro precedente e orientato su psichedeliche composizioni dark-pop, di cui i singoli Happy House, Christine e il successivo Israel.

Nel 1981 il repentino ritorno a sonorità oscure porta alla pubblicazione di Ju Ju. La band riesce ad unire le melodie gotiche con il tribalismo africano e la voce di Siouxsie assume un fervore ossessivo. Sempre nello stesso anno viene pubblicata la raccolta Once Upon A Time / The Singles.

Dall’album A Kiss In The Dreamhouse del 1982, caratterizzato in gran parte dall’uso del sintetizzatore, vengono tratti i singoli Slowdive e Melt.

Nel 1983 i Banshees prendono una pausa dividendosi i due parti: Siouxsie e Budgie formano il progetto The Creatures, mentre Steven Severin con Robert Smith forma il duo The Glove.

Con Robert Smith stabile in formazione viene registrato il doppio album live Nocturne alla Royal Albert Hall di Londra e l’anno successivo viene pubblicato l’album Hyaena, punto d’inizio del cambiamento pop-melodico che si ripeterà nei successi lavori; mentre alla chitarra subentra John Carruthers dei Clock DVA.
