ovvero speranze e paure del pop d'Oltremanica
Hopes And Fears, cd di debutto degli inglesi
Keane, tre ragazzi del Sussex, rischia di essere il miglior disco pop dell'estate 2004. Un album che in Inghilterra è ancora saldo ai primi posti delle charts, ma che in Italia ancora pochi conoscono; una collezione di 11 brani (per 45 minuti di musica) tutti in bilico tra le classiche sonorità britanniche dei Coldplay (soprattutto nel brano
Your Eyes Open) e dei Travis, e il pop degli A-Ha - in particolare degli ultimi due lavori della band scandinava. Dopo aver pubblicato degli EP per la Fierce Panda (la stessa etichetta che ha lanciato la band di Chris Martin) i Keane, guidati dal cantante Tom Chaplin, hanno firmato un contratto con la Island Records, etichetta fondata da Chris Blackwell che negli anni ha lanciato artisti come i Traffic di Steve Winwood, gli U2, Grace Jones, nonché i Cranberries e i dischi di maggior successo di Bob Marley and the Wailers. Il primo singolo pubblicato in Italia è stato
Somewhere Only We Know, traccia #1 del compact, e attualmente le radio stanno promuovendo
Everybody's Changing. E' difficile trovare del riempitivo, visto che quasi ogni brano potrebbe essere un hit-single:
This Is The Last Time più di ogni altro pezzo mostra le abilità canore di Chaplin, dotato di un falsetto malinconico ma non lagnoso né ruffiano; la melodia ariosa di
She Has No Time non sfigurerebbe in un disco del cantautore tedesco Maximilian Hecker. Volendo essere severi, Hopes And Fears è un po' troppo
perfettino e piacione (c'è chi insinua che sia opera di un gruppo studiato a tavolino) e spesso poco fantasioso negli arrangiamenti; non c'è nulla di rivoluzionario, se escludiamo l'assenza delle chitarre. Tuttavia rimane un disco solido e piacevole, consigliato a chi già ha avuto modo di apprezzare
