Dopo aver lasciato gli Ultravox!, nel 1979 John Foxx intraprende la carriera solista orientandosi completamente verso sonorità elettroniche create con i sintetizzatori.

Nel 1980, assieme al produttore Gareth Jones, pubblica sulla propria etichetta discografica “Metal Beat” il futuristico e glaciale lp Metamatic. I brani in esso inseriti dipingono scenari visionari e robotici e ne vengono tratti i singoli No-One Driving, A New Kind Of Man e Underpass.

Nello stesso anno, vengono prodotti i nuovi singoli Burning Car e Miles Away sempre legati alla freddezza compositiva del lavoro precedente.

Con il successivo lp The Garden del 1981, John Foxx propone uno stile decisamente più arioso, in linea con quello del suo ultimo album con gli Ultravox!. Da questo disco finisco su 7’’ i brani Europe After The Rain e Dancing Like a Gun. Dal nome dell’album stesso John fonda un personale studio di registrazione: “The Garden Studio”.

Nel 1983, con l’lp The Golden Section, la malinconia lascia il posto a pezzi più dance e orecchiabili come i singoli Endlessly, Your Dress e Like a Miracle in esso contenuti.

Il cambiamento stilistico sfocia in modo negativo nel banale album del 1985 In Mysterious Ways, al quale segue un lungo periodo di silenzio.
