- The Human League -

Nella Sheffield del 1977 due membri dei “Future”, Martyn Ware e Ian Craig Marsh, dopo le prime sperimentazioni con tastiere e sintetizzatori assieme ad Adi Newton, futuro membro dei Clock DVA, formano gli Human League, con Adrian Wright nel ruolo di scenografo e Phil Oakey alla voce.

L’anno successivo la band esordisce con il singolo Being Boiled e nel 1979 con l’ep The Dignity Of Labour di matrice industriale, nonché con il singolo I Don’t Depend On You.

Nello stesso anno viene pubblicato il primo album Reproduction, composto da futuristiche ed oscure sperimentazioni elettroniche ma con una certa vena pop. Dall’lp viene tratto il singolo Empire State Human.

Nel 1980, in piena esplosione sinth, la band ormai molto riconosciuta a livello underground fa uscire, preceduto dall’ep Holiday ’80, il secondo album Travelogue, tecnicamente simile al precedente e contenente il singolo Only After Dark.

A causa dell’insuccesso commerciale, nel 1981 Ware e Marsh abbandonano e formano gli Heaven 17. Con i rimanenti membri Oakey ricompone la band, facendovi entrare i tastieristi Ian Burder e Jo Callis e le coriste Joanne Catherall e Susan Ann.

Il nuovo corso del gruppo raggiunge inaspettatamente un enorme successo internazionale con il disco Dare! del 1981. Da esso vengono estratti The Sound Of The Crowd, Love Action (I Believe In Love), Open Your Heart e Don’t You Want Me, il quale finisce in vetta alle classifiche.

Come appendice discografica, l’anno successivo viene pubblicato l’album di remix Love And Dancing, concettualmente innovativo per l’epoca e successivamente l’ep Fascination!.

La pomposità e la plasticità del suono raggiunge l’eccesso nel 1984 con Hysteria, mentre a livello commerciale l’album è un passo indietro nonostante i singoli The Lebanon, Life On Your Own e Louise.
