Thursday, August 21, 2003 - ore 15:34 DRUM life Una standing ovation per il miglior batterista del mondo: MIKE PORTNOY  Mike Portnoy ( nome completo è Michael Stephen Portnoy) è nato il 20 aprile 1967 a Long Beach, New York. Il suo interesse per la musica comincia fin da piccolo, suo padre era un disc jockey di rock n' roll, quindi fin da giovane è sempre stato circondato da musica e dischi. Mike studia batteria, prende l'esame di teoria musicale al liceo classico e nel frattempo suona in varie band locali dove comincia ad incidere i primi album. Prende una borsa di studio per frequentare l' università di musica a Boston, la Berklee. I batteristi che hanno influenzato il suo modo di suonare sono Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Philips, John Bonham e Keith Moon, i gruppi sono i Rush, Frank Zappa, i Beatles, Queen, Yes, Metallica, Jellyfish, Iron Maidon, U2 e Jane's Addiction. Mike è anche un fan di musica rap. Ora suona con i Dream Theater e Liquid Tension experiment. Il suo set è composto da batteria Tama Starclassic (Maple) e piatti Sabian, pedali DW e accessori Latin Percussion. Mike usa delle bacchette firmate (a suo nome ovviamente) della Pro-Mark.
