Hummingbird

One, two, three, four
Of the men who were loved by you
Some were lookin for a woman to play
One who could venture to the empty rooms
And carry their bodies away
Of course there’s a ghost and maybe one was a king
He whispered but never came through
One so alone, sad as a poem
Who hovered by the window then flew
Away from poison rainbows
Away from fallen snow
Away from stumblin’ footsteps
Away from so alone
But to lie down beside you
To feel the heart beat in your breath
To carry my song to you
To bury the words inside
Is all I really want
Twisted and simple you curled into the shoulder
Of a joker that could not surrender
Like some endless river he broke into the layers
Sunsets darken the waters
Of course there was laughter in this shelter of strangers
In the rooms of "I love you I love you"
One so alone, sad as a poem
