Tuesday, March 28, 2006 - ore 12:51 LE ZEPPELIN ora e per sempre LONDRA - I rock fan non hanno dubbi: il più bell’assolo di chitarra della storia del rock è quello - leggendario da sempre - di Jimmy Page su ’Stairway to Heaven’ dei Led Zeppelin. Lo ha stabilito un sondaggio svolto tra i lettori maniaci della chitarra della rivista Total Guitar, che ha mostrato come il virtuosismo di Page, 35 anni dopo l’incisione della canzone, resti ancora insuperato nel cuore degli appassionati. ’Stairway to Heaven’, mai uscita come singolo, è una delle canzoni più reinterpretate della storia del rock: ne esiste persino una cover della prorompente cantante country Dolly Parton. Gli anni dunque passano, ma gli otto minuti di acrobazie di Page sulla chitarra elettrica, e il suo mitico assolo non passano mai di moda. Nella top ten stilata da Total Guitar, i Led Zep sono tallonati da un altro celebre assolo fatto da un altro gigante delle sei corde, Eddie Van Halen, quello del brano ’Eruption’ della band Van Halen. Terzo, Slash e la sua tagliente performance in ’Paradise City’ dei Guns n’ Roses. Al numero quattro, un altro ’evergreen’ per tutti coloro che si cimentano con la chitarra elettrica, ’Hotel California’ degli Eagles, anche se la canzone non dovrebbe in teoria essere citata nella categoria degli assoli, visto che si tratta di un duetto - ancorché memorabile - tra Joe Walsh e Don Felder. Stephen Lawson, direttore di Total Guitar, ha detto che il sondaggio è stato svolto tra 2.000 persone, tra cui molti chitarristi professionisti: "A tutti piace suonare una chitarra invisibile quando si ascolta una canzone dove c’é un chitarrista formidabile - spiega - Non sono sorpreso che Stairway to Heaven sia finita al primo posto. Non solo l’assolo di Jimmy Page è incredibilmente grintoso e scintillante, ma è anche strutturato in maniera geniale. Il ritorno di molta bella musica trainata dalla chitarra ci garantisce che suoneremo ancora per molto tempo le nostre chitarre invisibili ascoltando musica". ’Stairway to Heaven’ fu incisa nel 1971, in un’era in cui i lunghi assoli erano in voga. Ma se molte canzoni di quel periodo sono invecchiate male, Stairway ha retto benissimo. Anche se i Led Zeppelin si sciolsero nel 1980 dopo la morte del batterista John Bonham, la loro musica ha ancora oggi un grande seguito, in Gran Bretagna e a livello internazionale. Secondo me, mettere l’assolo di Paradise city nella terza posizione di questa classifica è un po’ azzardato. Malgrado sia un gran estimatore di Appetite for destruction e lo consideri uno dei migliori album della storia, credo ke prima di lui abbiano tralasciato performance decisamente migliori. Di certo nn posso conoscerle tutte, ma per esempio, l’assolo di Ritchie Blackmore in Highway star dei Deep Purple meriterebbe una menzione al merito  .Oppure Steve harris in Children of the damned .... oppure Jimi Hendrix in Little Wing.
