we met mario bellini in milan on april 5, 2004

what is the best moment of the day?
I’m moody and unpredictable. any moment is a good moment,
preferably when the sky is not grey.

what kind of music do you listen to at the moment?
I listen to a lot of music. I listen to everything,
but I am extremely selective when it comes to quality.
I hate background music or used as a ritual in a routine.

do you listen to the radio?
yes, especially in my car. words isolated from images
convey their extradordinary communicative value.

what books do you have on your bedside table?
in the evening I prefer to read 20th century and contemporary poetry.
essays and novels require the long time of youth,
rare free weekends, many intercontinental flights.

do you read design magazines?
I flip through the few main ones unsystematically.
architecture, mostly, but also furniture, cars and objects,
have to be read and understood in person, going in them,
touching them, taking them in your hand.

where do you get news from? newspapers?
radio, television, print in general, travelling and
continual exchanges linked to my work.

do you notice how women are dressing?
do you have any preferences?
I am foremost interested in people.
clothing, especially for women, is an important means
of expression and communication. I like invisible elegance
which evidences the personality and fascination without
aggressiveness and redundancy.

what kind of clothes do you avoid wearing?
architect and designer uniforms
(all black, or black with a white, collarless shirt.)
and ’uniforms’ in general, like ’climbing managers’.

do you have any pets?
no, no pets.

when you were a child, did you want to become an architect?
when I was 9 I built my first habitable house with bricks and I drew a
’strip’ in color with devils and ghosts to slide through a projector.

where do you work on your designs and projects?
everywhere: in bed, at home listening to music I know, in airplanes,
in hotels, and naturally in my studio at the tables with my young architects.
sometimes with closed eyes just before I go to sleep.

who would you like to design something for?
for anyone who can be a stimulating counterpart,
someone demanding or not easily pleased.
or who respects your capacity as a designer.

do you discuss your work with architects and designers?
when architects and designers meet they talk about other things.
we communicate better and more with our work and our writings.

describe your style, like a good friend of yours would describe it.
someone talked about my buildings as ’urban islands’, fragments
of urban fabric which generate spatial sequences rather then
objects in themselves. and regarding my objects, furniture and
machines, as inventions which involve sensorial experiences
and behaviors more than their ’function’...

can you describe an evolution in your work from your first projects
to the present day?
I like to consider every project like a new exploration to be
faced with curiosity, maximum mental openness and renewed
creative energy. I hate to recycle my linguistic clichets even though
I am always driven by the same designing attitude as in my early days.

what project has given you the most satisfaction?
those who, tempered by difficulty and adversity
(economic, technical, legislative, due to time, due to use)
have come to maturation without having been burdened
by some undigestible compromise.

is there any designer and/or architect from the past,
you appreciate a lot?
the history of architecture and design (which is experienced
and lived on the territory, in cities, in buildings and in museums)
are our point of reference and our source for training.
each time there are different masters, works or entire periods
(including contemporary experiences) which are either necessary
or indifferent for us. it would be reductive and insufficent to
list a series of names.

any advice for the young ?
no young person ought to undertake and continue in this
field without experiencing a strong internal necessity
supported by a specific talent.

what are you afraid of regarding the future
I try to maintain an attitude of moderate optimism thinking that
(as always happens) even our time, in the near future will be
considered with sufficiency because it is obsolete and with
nostalgia because it is the depository of irrimediable,
hopelessly lost values.
