1990s My Bloody Valentine It might seem wilfully perverse to nominate a group that was half-English and released only two albums (just the one in the 1990s). But 1991’s Loveless is up there with the finest Irish albums ever. It may not have been a huge commercial hit, but its scintillatingly abrasive sound has proven to be massively influential for the slew of guitar bands that have made their name since.
Frontman Kevin Shields has become an almost mythical figure among serious music fans for his singular vision and good old rock star eccentricity. Last year he contributed music to the superb Lost In Translation soundtrack - his first work in over a decade.
2000s Ash Arriving as one of the most thrilling young acts around with their late-1990s debut, the Downpatrick noiseniks would deliver one of this decade’s must-have releases - Free All Angels.
Packed to the hilt with hit singles, its potency and vibrancy has not diminished with repeat listening.
This year’s Meltdown showed that Tim Wheeler et al had lost none of their hard rock edge and it offers an intriguing pointer to the future for this excellent band.
Gifted live performers, Ash have become one of the most consistently strong acts on the festival circuit.
