Post dedicato alla cucina britannica. Ebbene sì, esiste anche quella e ai più sfugge. Diciamo che serve sapere dove andare, altrimenti o si magna male o è un salasso. Lungi da me paragonarla alla ben più ricca cucina nostrana, ma una capatina in terra di Albione ogni tanto è piacevole anche dal punto di vista gastronomico.
Da segnalare:
- Il sidro: bevanda pressochè inesistente da noi, tranne in pochi locali. Un’alternativa più dissetante della birra, il più diffuso è lo Strongbow, reperibile in ogni locale.
- Il cranachan: un dolce esclusivamente scozzese: base di buon whiskey, a cui si aggiungono frutti di bosco, granella di qualcosa e panna montata!
- La steak & ale pie: e tutte le "pie" in genere, sicuramente il piatto più originale che hanno. Soufflè ripieni di carne aromatizzata alla birra (o in alternativa pollo e funghi.... o salmone, come sperimentato)
- Le ale: mentre da noi l’ale è fiappa e insipida, nei pub britannici la versione non da esportazione è più corposa e ha un gusto più intenso. Il fatto che comunque sia sgasata la fa scendere mooolto facilmente. Impossibile dimenticare la stout per eccellenza, la Guinness, che in Irlanda è un’altra cosa rispetto che all’estero.
- L’idromele: una delle bevande alcoliche più antiche del mondo, un distillato di miele che fa circa 14-15 gradi: veramente ottimo, peccato che sia introvabile nei pub.
- Il "boxty": piatto irlandese veramente interessante: un pancake (identico come aspetto a quello tipico americano) di patate (probabilmente fatto con farina di patate) avvolto attorno a svariati ripieni (io ho provato quello al manzo irlandese e funghi).
- Il british breakfast: lì di mattina si mangiano di solito salsicce, fagioli, funghi, pomodori, uova e pancetta. Tutto insieme. E ovviamente i classici toasts imburrati. Simpatico il porridge, protagonista di un episodio piuttosto divertente.
- Il whiskey: le informazioni dicono che Edimburgo ha fatto un’altra vittima, che come me ha scoperto il mondo dei whiskey. Non è giusto, sono sempre stato io additato come "quello che prende whiskey"!
Menzione d’onore per l’haggis scozzese, la chocolate fudge cake, il chocolate pudding, le cozze irlandesi, l’irish stew, il filettone di angus (hmmmmm), il mitico SUBWAY e il Pret a Manger simbolo di ogni partenza da un aeroporto londinese.
